DMV Lockdown Basketball, a nonprofit rooted in Woodbridge, VA, is dedicated to serving our local community by bringing high-quality travel basketball programs closer to home. We eliminate economic and distance barriers, ensuring families have the chance to participate in competitive training and play. DMV Lockdown Program

Our travel program prepares youth for higher levels of competition while providing a positive outlet to reduce delinquency. As children reach 12 years old, program options become limited, and DMV Lockdown aims to fill that gap. We offer affordable, high-quality training for youth in the DMV area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age groups do you cater to?

We currently serve youth (17 and younger). We are actively recruiting middle school players to join our program.

How often are practices held?

Practices are held once or twice per week, with each session lasting between 1 to 1.5 hours. There are no practices on Prince William County School holidays, including spring break. Practice days or length may be extended as needed to prepare for upcoming tournaments.

How many tournaments do you participate in?

Each season lasts six months, during which DMV Lockdown participates in approximately seven tournaments at both local and regional levels. Each tournament includes at least three games, with two games typically played on Saturday and one or more games on Sunday. The number of games on Sunday depends on the team’s performance, as Day 2 often follows a single-elimination format—one loss ends the tournament for the team.

How can I enroll my child?

All participants must attend a tryout session and be selected to join the team. Tryouts for middle school boys will be held  on Friday, December 20, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Please register in advance.

If you’re interested in joining the team but cannot attend tryouts, please email DMVLockdownbasketball@gmail.com

What is the cost of the program?

Our program is a six-month commitment from January through June, with costs ranging from $0 to $650. The full program cost is $650, which covers gym space, tournament registration fees, uniforms, and player insurance.

Payments can be made in full or split into two installments of $325 each. If opting for the split payment plan, the first installment is due by January 5th, and the second by April 5th. For those paying in full, the payment is due by January 5th.

Scholarships and reduced pricing are available based on financial need and made possible through donations. All donations and fees directly support our educational and charitable mission under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

This program is designed to break down economic barriers to basketball access and help reduce juvenile delinquency by offering an elite travel basketball experience to families.

Parents are responsible for their own tournament entry fees, typically ranging from $20 to $40 per weekend. All tournaments are held within driving distance of Woodbridge, VA, and transportation can be provided for participants as needed. For any out-of-town tournaments, parents will also cover hotel expenses.

What is the difference between travel basketball and recreational or school leagues?

The primary differences between travel basketball and recreational basketball leagues lie in competition level, commitment, cost, and player development focus:

1. Competition Level

  • Travel Basketball:
Travel basketball is highly competitive, featuring skilled players and teams that often participate in tournaments at local, regional, or national levels. Teams are typically composed of players selected through tryouts, ensuring a higher level of talent and play.

  • Recreational Leagues:
Recreational leagues are less competitive and cater to players of all skill levels. The focus is more on participation, fun, and learning the game, with teams often formed based on age or locality rather than skill.

2. Focus on Player Development

  • Travel Basketball:
Travel leagues emphasize advanced skill development, strategy, and preparation for higher levels of play, such as high school or college basketball. Players receive more specialized coaching and compete against strong opponents, which helps refine their skills.

  • Recreational Leagues:
Recreational leagues focus on teaching the fundamentals of basketball, fostering sportsmanship, and ensuring a positive experience for all participants. The goal is often to introduce players to the game or provide a relaxed environment for those who enjoy basketball.

3. Game Play

  • Travel Basketball: Travel basketball teams often play significantly more games than recreational or school leagues. Each tournament weekend usually consists of three or more games, and a full travel season might include 20-30 games or more, depending on the team's schedule. For example, DMV Lockdown’s season includes approximately 24 games, providing players with ample opportunities to compete and improve their skills through frequent play.
  • Recreational or School Leagues: Recreational and school basketball leagues typically have shorter seasons, with teams playing around 10-12 games on average. The limited number of games provides a more relaxed schedule but fewer opportunities for game-time experience compared to travel basketball.

4. Cost

  • Travel Basketball:
Travel basketball is generally more expensive, covering costs like uniforms, tournament entry fees, gym space and sometimes professional coaching.

  • Recreational Leagues:
Recreational leagues are more affordable, with lower registration fees and minimal additional expenses, making them accessible to a broader audience.
